Back in 1.0 nether portals were changed so that they couldn't be broken by flowing liquid anymore. Which I think may have been a bug. There aren't any benefits of having portals not being broken by flowing liquid. There's also another creative way to break a nether portal that should be added. Currently, nether portal blocks can't be pushed.
